shooting and we're learning details how tsa agents respond. cbs reporter with more information from the fbi. today federal prosecutors say they filed charges against l.a.x. shooting suspect paul ciancia. investigators say he was dropped off at the airport before he walked up to the security checkpoint. >> the defendant is alleged to have pulled a smith & wesson .223 caliber assault rifle out of his bag and fired multiple rounds at point blank range at the tsa officer, who was standing on duty and in uniform, severely wounding tsa officer hender the defendant is then alleged to have begun walking away from the wounded tsa officer and going up an escalator and then coming back down that escalator to return

and shoot the wounded officer again. >> investigators say they found a signed hand-written note at the scene in which ciancia said i wanted to target officers. he has both uniform and undercover officers spread out throughout the airport and his department will maintain the enhanced deployment for as long as needed. >> to tell you how much we have and how much it's going to occur, i think if somebody else was planning this they better keep guessing. >> reporter: investigators say ciancia shot and killed gerardo hernandez, a father and husband. ciancia was shot before he was arrested. >> that was jeff winn reporting. widow of the tsa officer who was shot and killed made her first public statement today. >> i am truly devastated. we are all heartbroken and will

miss him dearly. thank you very much. >> ana hernandez says her husband work for the tsa at l.a.x. since 2010. the couple has two children, gerardo would have turned 40 next week. here is a live look outside of l.a.x. where the 100' pylons are lit up in blue is to honor tsa agent hernandez. and the shooting yesterday sent passengers scrambling, forcing many to leave their luggage behind, today people were allowed to go in and collect their belongings. some stayed in nearby hotels. cots were set up in a terminal for those who couldn't find a place to stay. some stranded were thankful strangers were there to help. >> they took a bunch of us to the food court out of his own pocket. >> there was homeland security and i can't remember his last name -- but he gave me some shoes and tried it help me out. >> even once the terminal is

back up and running today passengers still had to be patience. the lines to get through the security checkpoints were long. and for those flying between the bay area and los angeles, there were a few delays for flights at sfo on virgin america. oakland and san josi each had one flight out of los angeles canceled. other than that, there were no major problems. all right, parts the bay area will be blustery tonight. roberto gonzalez is here with the wind advisory. >> you remember this time last week we were talking about the wind virid for sunday and we all remember well how that panned out. very gusty winds. look at the blue highlighted areas. this is where you live, you do have a wind advisory in effect right now until monday at 7:00 a.m. most of this does encompass these areas. look at the clock as it ticks on by, right now san rafael up to 30 miles per hour wind

gusts. 19 tomorrow morning early in pleasanton, but 38 at vaca and a lot of these winds were dialed back during the afternoon hours, but increase sunday night. we'll talk about the possibility of downed power lines and high fire danger ann, coming up later in the news craft. >> thank you roberta, crime is up in and around uc berkeley. brian webb found out students are paying more attention to safety. >> reporter: crime on berkeley's campus is up this year, way up, and students are talking. >> i always see a new story everyday, just like somebody is getting robbed in south side. >> i have heard that people have gotten mugged on campus, more than usual, and i heard it's been a few cases rf the student newspaper shows that technology is the target from iphones to laptops and students walking by themselves are often the victims.

>> i think for women and like especially at nighttime, crime is really bad, yeah. >> reporter: campus police are taking notice, starting new nighttime patrols in high-crime areas and students admit they feel safer on-campus than off. >> and most students say they have already learned the best way to stay safe is to be smart. >> students should try to either walk with somebody or if they feel unsafe, call -- i think the university has systems set up, so it will be okay. >> reporter: brian webb, kpix 5. >> the student senate formerly asked campus leaders and campus police to address the crime issue. a deadly crash shutdown highway 1 in both directions since stinson beach. a car went over a cliff around 4:30. right now it's unclear how many people were killed. the highway re-opened around 7:00 this evening. a pleasanton man who was badly beaten outside of his

home has awakened from a medically-induced coma. david lamont went outside to ask a group of teens to quiet down. when he didn't come back, his wife went out and found him beaten and unconscious. doctors say lamont's condition is no longer life-threatening, but he is still unable to speak. the investigation is on hold until police can question him. a patient who was reported missing from a assisted-living facility has been found safe in san josi. 65-year-old bascom was taken to the hospital. he was missing from the valley springs manor facility after it was shut down a week ago thursday, because of a string of health and safety violations. new information on the owners of the facility where patients were abandoned when most of the workers walked out. >> i feel that what the owners did at this facility and other facilities. >> reporter:

the san francisco chronicle reports that the owner of valley springs manor dates back to the 1990s, hilda manuel owned other homes and racked up $860,000 in fines, yet was still able to obtain a license for this one. >> he he breathing. >> reporter: the new information comes as we heard the 911 calls from the two workers, a cook and janitor who stayed and remained unpaid to take care of the residents? >> the workers called emergency dispatchers four times over three days, but never told them that the citwas closed. the state revoked the license on october 4th. the opener's lawyer agreed speak to kpix 5, but only if we didn't show his face. >> nur a catch-22 situation, you can't take care of the

work and safety talk got renewed attention after two workers were killed on tracks. deaths may have helped to end the strike. >> it's most unfortunate, but yes, there was a lot the light shed on the real safety issues going on with bart. >> reporter: she says 88% of seiu's 1400 members approved the contract and says work safety is a big reason. >> our people are the people that step on the tracks and they do this idaho to make sure those tracks are clear for the trains as they pass through. they are also the workers that have to deal with thousand volts everyday. >> reporter: bart management says work rule changes played a rule. >> when management tries to manage and the old contract we were only able do with the union's approval and management never got to manage under the old contract. this was an essential provision for us to move forward and let management help shape where we need to goment atu also ratified the contract.
